Experience Another World Without Leaving Yours

Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go,
Even when he is old he will not depart from it.

London District Christian High School and Forest City Fire Protection are collaborating on a unique learning experience involving the LCH shop class. The feature wall and shelving they are producing for FCFP involves so much more than simply fabricating a few items.

“One of the frustrations (of teaching shop) is that you teach the skills and hope they use it at home,” says shop teacher Matt Rock. “This project allows the students to put their skills in practice right away.”

The project has given the students real world business experience in addition to their class room sessions. In addition to pipe fitting, collaborative design, and electrical design classroom units the students gained experience in researching the company, doing an initial interview to determine the company’s wants and needs, design, and prototyping.

“There were two projects (wall and shelves) and the students working on each had to do sales pitches,” says Rock. “The presentation was very true-life and a good learning experience.”

Both projects well represent the core of Forest City Fire Protection. The shelving project makes extensive use of pipe (similar to fire sprinkler pipe) as well as a beautiful art piece featuring lighting and sprinkler heads in the spirit of the company. The feature wall utilizes a back-drop mural of the first set of blueprints Forest City did in 1985 for Reuben and Wong’s Restaurant in Masonville Mall behind a tree whose (lighted) branches represent the values of the company, such as strength, family growth, beauty, and purity. The students prototyped their ideas and after approval fabricated the installations.

Through high academic standards of the educational program, collaborative learning opportunities in the community, extra-curricular activities and service projects, London Christian High is focused on helping students develop their interests, gifts and talents during their high school experience. The modern and well-equipped shop is just one of the ways that London Christian High integrates the Christian faith with academics and real-world application to prepare students for a life of service to God and others.
