Tips For Reading And Understanding The Bible

2 Chronicles 7: 13-16: 13 If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, 14 and My people [d]who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the [e]prayer offered in this place. 16 For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that My name may be there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.

The London Christian Prayer Breakfast, the kick off event for the London Day of Prayer, was held on May 18, 2017, at the Lamplighter Inn. The MC of the event was Eric Stolte (past national director of the Navigators of Canada), and Councilman Paul Hubert brought greetings from the government of the city of London.

Christian recording artist Jacob Moon sang a couple of original songs before the keynote speaker. Moon’s music brought both a sweetness and seriousness to the event, appropriate on a day in which the people of London were committing to lifting their city in prayer. The keynote speaker was Sarah Bessey, author of “Jesus Feminist” and Out of Sorts: Making Peace With an Evolving Faith.” She is a gifted storyteller and communicator whose easy manner belies a serious depth of faith.

Bessey described how Jesus rescued her from despair and hopelessness, and how elements in Christianity as diverse as speaking in tongues and the Book of Common Prayer and the liturgy have helped to make up for the inadequacy of her own words in her relationship with God.

Especially striking was Bessey’s experience in Haiti. She described how they were trying to build a much-needed school, but the land they were given for the compound had a mountain in the middle of it. There was no heavy equipment available to clear the land. She said that a man showed up with a bucket, a shovel, and a pickaxe, saying it was too late for him, but he wanted to do it for the little ones, and he began to move that mountain one bucket full at a time. Four months later the mountain was moved, and a year later there was a full school running on the formerly unusable ground. “Sometimes mountains being moved looks like showing up with pickaxes,” preached Bessey.

Rounding out the morning were Pastor Jude St John of West End Alliance who prayed for our city leaders, Sgt Dave Rektor of the Ontario Provincial Police who prayed for those who protect us, and Mechele teBrake of Mission Services of London who prayed for the marginalized in our city.

Please remember to pray for our city throughout the year. We hope we can see you at the London Christian Prayer Breakfast in 2018.
