By An interview with Steve MacClure by Mike Toth

Luke 7:47: Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.

Giving Back Music is a global Internet based music ministry headquartered in London, Ontario. The founder of Giving Back, Steve MacClure starting writing and recording original Christian songs in 2008.

MacClure may seem to be an odd choice to be called as a modern day psalmist, but his life speaks of the redemptive power of Christ. Having survived an abusive childhood he became a classic overachiever, succeeding in business and living the “good life” that wealth can bring.

In the middle of this ungodly lifestyle, however, MacClure began to realize there had to be something more to life. A friend of his who had turned his own life around through Christ was with him when he bought a Bible. The friend put a tract from the Billy Graham association called “Mustard Seed” in the Bible without MacClure knowing.

“A year later I discovered and read the tract and thought, ‘hey, I’ve got that much faith,’ and prayed on the spot and turned my life over to Jesus,” says MacClure. “Since then I’ve had no urge to drink.” A few years later he felt the call to write worship music.

The path to the ministry he now headquarters out of the studio in his basement has not been an easy one, and some of the tenacity and resilience that had made him a success has been used for God’s glory. The first album of original Christian music Giving Back CD recorded in 2008 (with a friend, his wife and daughter) was sent out to 2200 Christian radio stations throughout North America, and they received no response at all. They remained undeterred.

“At that time we were also gigging in different churches. On the way home from a church in Brighton, Michigan I heard (the Lord’s) voice say, ‘What are you doing, going to auditions? I want you to give back,’” says MacClure. When he got home from the trip he secured the website domain name “givingback.ca” and started inviting Christian musicians and vocalists to come and record for the purpose of getting the worship music up on the web – in the four corners of the world. Psalm 105 v1-4 was the inspiration. To date, the website www.givingback.ca and its music has been accessed from over 60 countries around the world.

MacClure credits his tenacity through adversity and rejection to his ministerial calling. “We are doing this to give back to Jesus. People can listen all they want on the website for free.” While Giving Back has had much positive feedback about the worship music, for MacClure and the teams, “It’s all so God gets the glory.”
