Tips For Reading And Understanding The Bible

By Mike Toth

Matthew 9:36-37: 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were weary and scattered like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few.” NKJV

Being a "Preacher's Kid" can be a challenging lot in life, as often there is greater scrutiny and pressure than for the other church kids. John Mitchell, though, was the type of PK that those of us who didn’t grow up in the faith can only envy.

“My parents were Pentecostal believers, and I grew up listening to my father’s sermons,” says John. “I can still remember some of them to this day, hearing God’s word was a part of everyday life in our home in Fife, Scotland.”

One of John’s earliest experiences was when his family travelled to Newport, South Wales to an Oral Roberts crusade, camping in farmers’ fields along the way. He saw his father praying for people in the prayer tent. “I witnessed people getting out of wheelchairs. Oral Roberts put his hand on my head, and I experienced a supernatural encounter with God. It was an incredible moment for me.” Later, at age 9, he got down on his knees and committed his life to Christ.

“I was at a camp that was seven miles from where the Welsh Revival occurred when I was 16 years old. An appeal was made asking if anyone wanted to be baptised in the Holy Spirit. An Evangelist by the name of Hubert Edwards put his hand on my head, and I felt fire in the depths of my being. I had been a reserved person before this, and after that experience I felt the call of God on my life, and have had His flame burning in my soul since that day.” Later that year he preached his first sermon, on Romans 12:1-2: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

John attended Bible College in South Wales, married a preacher’s daughter, and followed his call to ministry as the Pastor of a church in a mining town, evangelizing and passing out gospel literature in the many pubs. Teen Challenge led him to Canada, and eventually Christ for all Nations (CfaN), where he has been the Executive Director for the past 20 years.

One exciting aspect of the ministry of CfaN Canada is the countrywide prayer focus. After the weekly TV broadcast with Daniel Kolenda and Reinhard Bonnke (also available on viewers from Newfoundland to British Columbia call in with prayer requests for healing, salvation, and for difficult family situations that they are facing. The Christ for all Nations staff also pray for the nation, the city of London, and for Pastors and churches throughout Canada to experience a mighty move of the Holy Spirit. “I want to see people’s lives transformed by Jesus, and see the harvest brought in. I want to see those that need Jesus find Him. As Reinhard Bonnke says, ‘If the ministry of Christ for all Nations is not winning souls then we have no reason to exist.’

Every believer is called to be a witness, and through the power of the Holy Spirit we can share the gospel with others. God wants us to be soul winners. We are called to plunder hell to populate heaven. Our purpose and focus at Christ for all Nations, is to see lives in Canada and around the world touched and changed for Eternity. What an amazing privilege!”
