If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? James 2:15-16 (NASB)

You could be forgiven for passing right by the beautifully appointed little storefront at 10 Queen St., St. Thomas. The white and green hues may lead you to believe another entrepreneur has set up shop to sell expensive wares. While what goes on inside is beautiful and valuable, it is more precious in the sight of the Lord than any retail outlet could hope to attain.

The Grace Café opened on December 12, 2014 as a street mission with the aim of providing lunches, coffee, children’s clothing, and a cozy place to meet and fellowship. "Our scripture verse for the work is James 2:15-16," says Ginny Trepanier, founder of The Grace Café. "It has been shortened to 'Be warmed and be fed', which is on our front window." Her background as the Food Services Manager at Teen Challenge Farm and volunteering at the Ark Aid Street Mission in London helped shape her response when she saw people wandering the streets of St. Thomas.

"I had this conversation with the Lord, 'If I had a lot of money, Lord, I could open a Soup Kitchen'. 'Could I do that Lord?' 'I don't have a lot of money, but I could do that…could I do that Lord?'" says Trepanier. "Every time I said it, the idea got stronger. I asked various Christians who I knew would advise me well & then asked my husband". He said, "What great idea! Lets do it!"

"I live in St Thomas and see daily the need. There is no other Mission/Church or government agency providing lunches 5 days each week with the Big Breakfasty Brunch on Saturdays. We are open 10-3 to provide coffee, muffins and hot lunches everyday but Sunday. There are lots of dinners available around the city but nothing in the middle of the day."

When the commitment was made to start the Café, Trepanier went to local churches, government agencies, group homes, and even the police to explain the vision. The response of the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with food being dropped off almost daily and donors contributing from as far away as Halifax, NS.

"We are serving anyone who comes in. It is a very varied crowd. Some elderly, some very mentally challenged, some homeless, some disconnected, new to town or just out of jail…and some who have a modest home but are lonely. God's GRACE is covering all!"

"I am surprised that there are so many with serious mental challenges…so many in need in this extremely prosperous land of Canada!" says Trepanier. "We have only been open 3 months so relationships are just forming. There are several women with various stages of mental challenges who look to us at the Café for a kind word, a listening ear & encouragement. They are very sweet & very needy in so many different ways. We are helping as we can."

Trepanier's enthusiasm and love for both the people the Café serves and her Saviour comes through in her very personal appeal to other believers: "I BEGGED the Lord last year to USE me! BEGGED! "PLEEEEZ use me Lord!!! PLEEZ PLEEZ” I find many people very unsure of how to help or what to do with their lives...I say...stay close to the Lord, even if life is sad or hard, just keep doing the right thing and keep on with God and He will use you in His own way. PERSIST. He knows!"
