By Tyler Shaule - Executive Director of Forest Cliff Camps

With summer approaching, you are likely in the midst of scheduling vacation time, planning activities to keep your kids entertained and supervised, and figuring out who’s picking up the kids from soccer practice twice a week. Among the many program and activity choices available to parents, a week at summer camp is still one of the most valuable experiences a child can have.

Kids need camp. A summer camp experience is unique from the regular activities that children participate in throughout the year and is foundational in developing confident and flourishing children that are growing in faith and love with God.

A summer camp environment is the perfect place for kids to grow in independence. Camp draws children away from the normal routines of life, provides them with unique activities and fun adventures that spark their imagination in a fresh way.

Good friends and the feeling of belonging can make all the difference in the life of a child. Friendships with mature staff and other campers, forged through shared experiences at camp, last a lifetime and provide a connection that helps young people navigate the challenges of life.

At camp, caring counselors and leaders come alongside campers, finding that special thing about them and nurturing it. Many campers point back to a positive role model they met at camp as one who helped shape their direction and made an eternal investment in their lives.

According to research, most parents and kids have only 3.5 minutes of significant conversation each week. Summer camp provides an opportunity for children to share their hopes, fears and challenges with a caring staff member that has intentionally grown a meaningful friendship with them over the week. It’s a very special moment for parents to hear about how a cabin leader their child looked up to has impacted the kind of young adult they want to grow to be.

Independence, new friendships, close community and mentorship all support the most important aspect of a summer camp experience: discovery. Camp is the ideal venue for children to discover more of themselves and God. A camp that will partner with your family in focusing on God and exploring His message of love, forgiveness and hope is incredibly valuable and, hopefully, life-changing.

A week away for your child at summer camp is much more than “just camp”. It is full of meaningful moments, exciting adventures, new friendships and life-long memories that have the power to shape their heart and change their life.
