Tips For Reading And Understanding The Bible

…by Kerry Wilson

The familiar sights of the school year have become commonplace again as the leaves begin to fall and (maybe?) the snow flurries begin to fly - big, yellow school buses, sidewalks swarming with children in the morning and afternoon, and crossing guards smiling and waving to drivers as those swarms migrate from one side of the road to the other. Another school year sight - one that’s not always visible to the general public - is that of Key Bible Club leaders in five southern Ontario school boards, setting up learning activities and resources in their designated school room in preparation for the children who will be coming to the weekly club meeting. There are exciting things happening in our local public schools as children are presented with God's love and forgiveness through Jesus Christ, and many are making decisions to follow Him.

Key Bible Clubs, operated by Christian Service Centres of Canada (CSC), was established in 1990 after Ontario ended all "indoctrinational religious education" in the classroom, and with it over forty years of CSC led religious classes in public schools. Instead of the in-class teaching of the past, the clubs now meet during noon time, before school or after school for 30-45 minutes on a weekly basis. The clubs use a five year curriculum that covers major Bible themes such as Creation, the Ten Commandments and how to live for Christ. Children are not coerced into accepting Christ, but the plan of salvation is woven throughout the stories and discussed at appropriate times.

Ron Easton, Key Bible Clubs Program Director, explains that the clubs are allowed to operate under the Education and Training Act as long as they are not held during regular instructional times. Recently, Mr. Easton points out, the Thames Valley District School Board has eliminated the noon time option for the clubs, but the Gospel continues to be shared early in the morning and after the last bell of the day has rung!

Dayle Hayoe, a Brant Key Bible Club teacher, loves the opportunity she has to share Christ with so many children. Last spring, after an Easter lesson on the crucifixion, Dayle was approached by a little girl who was quite upset that God had allowed Christ to be treated so badly by the people. Dayle took the opportunity to explain that Christ's love kept him on the cross, not any man-made nails. The little girl walked away with another girl, but in a short time returned to tell Dayle that they had accepted Christ as their Savior.

Presently there are 77 clubs operating in Ontario communities from Niagara to Sarnia - that means that almost 100 times a week the love of God is shared very deliberately and openly in our public schools. Please pray for the leaders and students who are involved in Key Bible Clubs. To find out more about this amazing ministry…. Go to their website at or e-mail them at
