…by Mary Haskett

Towards the end of summer and before children returned to school, Dorothy and Steve Clarke hosted a barbeque in their backyard. They invited the Bible study class from their church, as well as neighbours, and people from their work places. All those invited were invited to bring others too!

The Clarke's yard bustled with activity as people came with a variety of foods from a variety of countries. There were guests from the Philippines, Burundi, Uganda, Columbia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, India, and of course people native to Canada. Children chased each other on the lawn with the energy that only they can muster.

Men took charge of cooking hamburgers and hot dogs to perfection on the barbeque in the corner of their yard, and women stationed themselves behind a table and served guests. As people settled down to eat, acquaintances were made. Later on when appetites were satisfied some broke out into song, with hand clapping and upbeat choruses, and some danced.

In the church of the Nazarene, Pastors Junior and Rose Sorzano repeatedly stress the need to be purposeful and intentional in witness, with the end result being to win souls for the Kingdom. A series of sessions attended by ministry leaders in the church had led Steve & Dorothy to act on these teachings. Now two and a half months later, because of the barbeque with purpose, five people are meeting with Dorothy and Steve in the pastors' home to study The Purpose Driven Life, along with the Bible. Two have already accepted the Lord and some are attending the Church of the Nazarene.

Both Steve and Dorothy say the most gratifying aspect of their ministry is to see people come into a personal relationship with the Lord. The barbeque afforded a comfortable setting, with opportunity for people to interact and get to know others in their community.
