As the Ontario government ends the charge for licence plate renewal stickers, Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario is asking people to donate the equivalent of the renewal fee to a fund for affordable housing.

Members of the community from Brant, Elgin, Middlesex, Norfolk, Oxford and Perth counties can donate their $120 sticker fee at: habitat4home.ca/4homes in support of affordable housing, and will receive a removable static cling sticker to display in their vehicle window.

"We are grateful to local supporters Anna and Tom McInerney who brought us the idea for this campaign and made a donation to get the program started," said Sharon Brennan, GM Community Partnerships for Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario. "Having the support of the community as we work to provide safe, decent and affordable housing means everything to us."

The McInerneys were happy to help. “We just thought that, rather than waiving these fees, the government could have directed the funds to the real needs of the community, and this is an opportunity for all of us to do that – together.”

In London and area, one hundred percent of the funds raised through this initiative will be directed to Heartland on the Thames, a twenty-unit property on Highbury Avenue featuring two-bedroom condos with some accessible units. In the Brant-Norfolk region, the revenue will go directly to the Brantwood Project, a fifty-six-unit affordable housing complex also containing some accessible units. In both projects, the Habitat homes are geared to income and built above Energy Star standards.
