Psalm 72: 1-8: Give the king Your judgments, O God,
And Your righteousness to the king’s son.
May he judge Your people with righteousness
And Your afflicted with justice. Let the mountains bring peace to the people,
And the hills, in righteousness.
May he vindicate the afflicted of the people,
Save the children of the needy
And crush the oppressor.

Let them fear You while the sun endures,
And as long as the moon, throughout all generations.
May he come down like rain upon the mown grass,
Like showers that water the earth.
In his days may the righteous flourish,
And abundance of peace till the moon is no more.

May he also rule from sea to sea
And from the River to the ends of the earth. (NASB)

The first eight verses of Psalm 72 present a beautiful prophetic picture of the modern nation of Canada. From the glorious landscape to the proclamation of God’s appointed to pursue justice for those who have none Canada’s calling as God’s nation is clear, yet often lost in the noise of modern society. In fact, Psalm 72: 8 is inscribed on the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill. It is in this spirit that the Bible League of Canada has produced the book “One Dominion: Celebrating Canada.”

Co-authored by Paul Richardson and Bob Beasley of the Bible League of Canada “One Dominion” is 96 pages of beautiful portraits of the nation and rich descriptions of the Christian history and calling of Canada.

“Everyone knows the negatives,” acknowledges Beasley. “There are sad chapters in our history (such as Residential Schools), but we want to celebrate the rich history of Canada.”

Examples of this rich history include Tommy Douglas, Member of Parliament, the first national leader of the New Democratic Party, premier of Saskatchewan, and the father of universal health care in Canada. Douglas, considered by many to be the greatest Canadian, was a Baptist minister. The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto was started by a bible study group led by Elizabeth McMaster. The legacy of pursuing justice can be seen in the Christian church’s involvement in the Syrian refugee crisis today.

“Canada is a nation of peace that welcomes foreigners,” says Beasley. “New Canadians are my heroes. Many of them tell me that they are sacrificing it all to come here for their children.”

The book combines the authors love of Canadian history with their (and that of the Canadian Bible Society) commitment to the spread of the Word of God.

“The living Word of God changes lives by the Holy Spirit,” says Beasley. “The world needs the living Word of God, and we need to be people of the Word.”
